We were going to play at the opening of this year’s klub katarakt, performing do nothing, just wait, the singing will start…. sooner or later by Matthias Kaul, who passed away last year. There was also going to be a whole concert by L’art pour l’art dedicated to his memory.
But the festival is cancelled and postponed to February. Let’s hope.
A new year and Nelly Boyd is again performing at klub katarakt at Kampnagel, Hamburg. We are taking part in the opening on January 15, where we will – together with lots of Hamburg friends and colleagues – play in all three katarakt halls simultaneously (well, sometimes).
We are also performing in the closing Long Night (January 18), playing the Hamburg premiere of Double Helix by Alvin Lucier, for four electric guitars with e-bows.
We will play with Phill Niblock again! At klub katarakt on Friday, January 18.
Together with our colleagues Partitions & Resonances from Berlin we will premiere Phill’s piece A Rose in Bloom, a combination of One Large Rose and Two Blooms. We will also play Tow by Tom.
Players are Catherine Lamb, viola, Johnny Chang, violin, Morten J Olsen, vibraphone, Hannes Lingens, accordion, Mike Majkowski, double bass, Derek Shirley, cello
and Robert Engelbrecht, cello, electric guitar, Jan Feddersen, evolver, electric guitar, Ignacio Fernández-Bollo, piano, electric guitar, Johann Popp, electric guitar.
We will also appear at the opening on Wednesday, January 16, together with many other performers. It will be a Parcours with lots of pieces from eight centuries, often simultaneously. We will play:

Robert Engelbrecht: Drohne 4
John Cage: Music for Marcel Duchamp
Morton Feldman: Piano Piece 1952
Steve Reich: Pendulum Music
Hanns Eisler: Hollywooder Liederbuch

Also, we’re at it again on the Long Night on Saturday, January 19:

for five side bassdrums – world premiere
With guest performer Alexandra Gramatke and under the direction of the composer.
Plus a solo performance by Moxi Beidenegl.
Plus Ujoforyt (2012) by Jan Feddersen, performed in two versions for toy piano and celesta, respectively, by Ju-Ping Song.
On short notice, we will play on Wednesday at the opening of klub katarakt. Together with the colleagues from Decoder, TonArt, Stark Bewölkt and other guests we will play Christian Wolff‘s Burdocks. The composer is present and we already had some days of rehearsals with him. Also on the programme the world premiere of his new piece Where. Nelly Boyd is joined by Moxi Beidenegl, Johann Popp and Stephan Marc Schneider.
On the last day of the festival, the Long Night, we will play together with other musicians the premiere of the last piece by Ignacio Mendez, who passed away last October. The piece is called Ultimo día and is for 4 guitars, violin, saxophone, keyboard and tape. Ignacio was a founding member of Nelly Boyd but quit the group in 2005. He is missed and we are glad that we can play this.
We are playing again at this year’s klub katarakt festival at Kampnagel, at the opening night on Wednesday, January 15: Hommage à Phill Niblock. We will play the world premiere of Niblock‘s new piece Three Petals for three orchestras in three halls, with guest musicians Georgia Hoppe and Ignacio Fernández-Bollo. The other ensembles are Trio Scordatura from Amsterdam, joined by Guy de Bièvre and Harald Muenz, and Ensemble neoN from Oslo. Also on the programme Niblock’s Tow by Tom and Vlada BC. In addition we will also play do nothing, just wait, the singing will start…. sooner or later by Matthias Kaul, neoN will play Alvin Lucier‘s Two Circles, and Trio Scordatura will play Time Zones 0.5 by Guy de Bièvre.
Also, don’t miss the opportunity to hear Charles Curtis performing Just Charles & Cello in The Romantic Chord by La Monte Young on Thursday, Jan 16!!!
We will play on the opening night: 5 ROOMS, a concert installation for three ensembles, together with Decoder and Nyx. It seems like we will play two new compositions for three halls by Jan Feddersen and Peter Imig, respectively, as well as an older piece by Robert Engelbrecht (in one hall).
We will also be part of the katarakt Allstars, performing a rock version of Terry Riley’s classic “In C” on the closing night: February 2, 11 PM
